Libba Bray on The Diviners and YA Authors’ Responsibility to Readers

Paramount Pictures has already scooped up the screen rights to Libba Bray‘s new novel, The Diviners, releasing September 18, set in 1920s New York.

The story, described by Libba in this Bibliostar.TV interview as “The X-Files with flappers,” follows Evie O’Neill’s transition from small-town Ohio to New York City speakeasies and Ziegfeld girls, but with a city-that-never-sleeps twist. Her Uncle Will, whom Evie is sent to live with, is the curator of the Museum of American Folklore, Superstition and the Occult. As Jazz Ager Evie might say, let the heebie jeebies begin. The Diviners is the first in a four-book series, and Paramount is currently planning a film franchise for the Diviners books.

According to Mike Fleming at Deadline New York, Bray will also adapt the screenplay and serve as Executive Producer for The Diviners movie, which will be produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Schwartz and Savage are part of an effort to bring more youth-centric projects to Paramount, including their upcoming October 26 release, Fun Size, starring Jane Levy, Victoria Justice and Thomas Mann.

Book to movie fans will also be excited to hear that Paramount also recently acquired From What I Remember, the Stacy Kramer/Valerie Thomas young adult novel from Hyperion which released in June.

In this first segment from our Bibliostar.TV interview, Bray provides background about the story, and explains her perspective about her responsibility to her readers and the question of role models in young adult literature. Stay tuned for more from our Libba Bray interview in coming days.
