Shelf Indulgence with David Maraniss, Author of Barack Obama: The Story

David Maraniss, an associate editor at The Washington Post, is the author of critically acclaimed bestselling books on Bill Clinton, Vince Lombardi, Vietnam and the sixties, Roberto Clemente, and the 1960 Rome Olympics.

His newest book is Barack Obama: The Story, which, similar to First in His Class, Maraniss’s lauded biography of former President Bill Clinton, was also written near the conclusion of the sitting President’s first term of office. In what is now signature Maraniss style, The Story provides a vigorously researched, beautifully written backstory to the Obama presidency, sharing and bringing to light the forces that shaped the first black president of the United States.

Maraniss won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of Clinton, was part of a Post team that won the 2007 Pulitzer for coverage of the Virginia Tech tragedy. He has been a Pulitzer finalist three other times, including in the nonfiction history category for They Marched Into Sunlight: War and Peace, Vietnam and America, October 1967.

In this video, Maraniss walks through a favorite bookstore, sharing some of the important books that have influenced his own life and writing career.
